Purple Drank

"Purple drank” (also called “drank” and many other names) is a potentially dangerous drink that mixes cough syrup (containing codeine) with another drink, such as Sprite or rum or vodka. Purple drank either started or was popularized in Houston, contributing to its nickname as the “City of Syrup.”

Purple drank is mentioned in many hip-hop lyrics and is associated with the Houston-based musical beats of “chopped & screwed.”

Wikipedia: Purple drank
Purple Drank is an recreational drink popular amongst the hip-hop community of the Southern United States. Its main ingredient is prescription-strength cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine.

The purple-ish hue of Purple Drank comes from dyes in the cough syrup. Recently, the term has expanded to cover mixtures including over-the-counter cough syrup. Other terms for Purple Drank include Purple Oil, Sizzurp, Drank, Purple Tonic, Serbian Intestinal Scum Drizzank, Southern Lean, Texas Tea, Memphis Mud, Mrs. Dranklesworth, Derek’s Dookie Sauce, Tsikuni, Lean, Syrup, P-Flav, Slip, Purple Sprite, Surp, Bazzigazzulp (a portmanteau of Big Gulp and hip-hop slang), PG Tips, and Purp.

History
Houston, Texas producer DJ Screw first popularized the concoction, which is widely attributed as a source of inspiration for the “chopped & screwed” style of hip hop music. Originally, the active ingredient of “Syrup” was cough syrup containing promethazine and codeine. The concoction first gained popularity in the underground Houston, Texas rap scene and later spread to other southern states.

In June of 2000, Three 6 Mafia’s single “Sippin On Some Sizzurp,” featuring UGK and Project Pat brought the term “purple stuff” to a nationwide audience. In addition, Three 6 Mafia’s single “Rainbow Colors” featuring Lil’ Flip pertains to the consumption of purple drank; furthermore, the addition of a jolly rancher to a cup of purple dranks creates a spectrum of colors, hence “rainbow colors.” On November 16, 2000, several months after the video to Three 6 Mafia’s single debuted, DJ Screw died of a suspected overdose of codeine and alcohol. The mixture has also been referenced in lyrics of other rappers, including UGK’s “Sippin and Spinnin” and “Purple Drank”, as well as tracks by Big Moe, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, T.I., Lil’ Flip, Lil’ Wyte, Three Six Mafia, Project Pat, T-Pain, Chamillionaire, Big Moe, Slim Thug, Pat Cash and Z-Ro. In September of 2006, Terrence Kiel, a San Diego Chargers player, was arrested during practice for the possession with intent to sell of what authorities referred to as “Lean”.

New Orleans rapper Lil’ Wayne frequently mentions drinking Purple Drank. In the Duffle Bag Boy music video he can be seen holding a Styrofoam cup with “RIP DJ Screw” written on it. In the remix to “Throw Some D’s” on his mixtape Da Drought 3 he claims “I’m not a rookie, I’m a pro..methazine fiend” as well as stating “You know what’s in my Styrofoam...what? S-Y-R-UP.” He also refers to the substance in the song “We Takin’ Over,” where he says that “I like my Sprite Easter pink,” an overt reference to the color of the beverage. Lil’ Wayne also refers to Purple Drank in the freestyle rap “Live From 504,” where he rhymes “And yep I sip that lean.” Other references include the song “I Know the Future,” where Wayne states, “I’m on that lala, twist it up, I’m on that syrup slow it down,” an overt reference to the drug as well as a reference to marijuana.

Ingredients
Active ingredients
The active ingredient of purple drank is codeine, a narcotic medication contained in prescription cough syrup. It is, however, not made with over-the-counter cough syrups such as Robitussin, which may contain dextromethorphan as well as other drugs. Although dextromethorphan is sometimes used recreationally, it has different effects. Some prescription cough syrups also contain antihistamine medications, such as promethazine, which have a mild sedative effect. When taken in large quantities, both medications can lead to sedation and altered levels of consciousness. The syrup usually used in purple drank contains 10mg of codeine and 6.25 mg of promethazine per 5 mL. Users ingest roughly 120-250 mg of codeine with this dose. When hydrocodone is substituted, the dose can be overwhelming at higher common doses, leading to vomiting and other mild opiate overdose symptoms.

Blitzkrieg World War

Hitler dictates terms

On 21 June 1940, early in the second year of World War Two, the French president, Marshall Philippe Pétain, sued for peace with Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. In the course of the negotiations Pétain - victor of the battle of Verdun in World War One - agreed to cede three-fifths of French territory to German control.

In one of history's great ironies, Hitler insisted that the armistice be signed in the very railway car in which Germany had been compelled to admit defeat at the end of World War One. He was in a good position to dictate such terms.

It had taken only a few short weeks for the Wehrmacht (the German army), under his control, to crush the army of the French Third Republic . His well-trained and organised troops had also caused France's Allies, in the form of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), to beat an ignominious retreat from continental Europe.

Thus between 10 May and 21 June 1940, the Wehrmacht had accomplished what the army of Kaiser Wilhelm II had not managed to do in four years of desperate fighting in World War One.

Allies unprepared

A Maginot Line Bunker The Maginot Line: the Allies expected a protracted, defensive war © Across the English Channel, a stunned British military establishment struggled to determine how it was that events had so quickly gone so horribly wrong. The BEF had sailed for France believing that they and their French ally were well equipped and well trained to fight a modern war. In truth, as events proved, they were completely unprepared to face Hitler's Wehrmacht.

During World War One, the armies of the two Allies had dug in for what became a long, drawn-out conflict. And in 1940, influenced by this experience, the British and French leaders of World War Two were still expecting to fight a war in which the defensive would dominate. With this approach in mind, the French army was sent to man France's heavily fortified border with Germany, the Maginot Line, and to await a German attack. The BEF was sent to join the line of French troops defending the border with Belgium.

... they were completely unprepared to face Hitler's Wehrmacht ...

They expected that battles would develop slowly and be dominated by 'traditional' arms - those of the infantry and the artillery. Although the two armies had more than 3,500 tanks between them, these were largely cast in a supporting role.

The events in May and June 1940 proved that this outdated vision of war could not have been further from reality. This time, unlike the Allies, the Germans intended to fight the war offensively, and win quickly.

German tactics

At dawn on 10 May, the Germans began an invasion of Belgium and the Netherlands. Accordingly, convinced that they were facing a repeat of the German strategy of 1914, Allied commanders moved the bulk of their forces from the Franco-Belgian border into defensive positions within Belgium to await the continuation of the German attack. In so doing, they fell right into Hitler's trap.

Rather than repeating the World War One Schlieffen Plan, the Germans in 1940 advanced with their main thrust through the Ardennes Forest, in order to smash the vulnerable flank of the Allies. As 29 German divisions advanced through the Netherlands and Belgium in the north, 45 further divisions, including about 2,400 tanks in 7 divisions, burst through the Allied right flank and drove towards the English Channel.

... the German advance south from Belgium was swift and decisive.

By 21 May, this thrust had reached the Channel and encircled 35 Allied divisions, including the BEF. Although the French army put up token resistance for several more weeks, their spirit was broken and the German advance south from Belgium was swift and decisive.

Despite desperate attempts by Winston Churchill to bolster French resolve, the defeat of the British and French armies in May effectively spelled the end of French resistance. The Allied armies, completely unprepared for the rapid, mobile operations of the Germans, had simply been out-fought at every turn.

iPhone 4 Recall Rumors Untrue

Rumors of the iPhone 4 recall are circulating across the web after signal issues have been reported. It was then followed by a fake Steve Jobs twitter account tweet that says Apple might have to recall the device that was later picked-up by Daily Mail.

The tweet says: “We may have to recall the new iPhone. This, I did not expect.

Daily Mail published a story yesterday quoting @ceoSteveJobs‘ tweet above. As of this writing, the article has already been deleted but you could still read the story from syndicated sites.

You can still find other sites that copied the story by typing “Apple iPhone 4: The much-vaunted gadget may be recalled” or “Apple iPhone 4 may be recalled, says Steve Jobs‎” on Google’s search box.

According to AppleInsider, iPhone 4′s signal issues observed by the owners appears to be a software problem that an OS update could fix. iOS 4.0.1 is expected to be released early next week.
