Valmeticulous

Val Meticulous, Kathy Beachler was a meticulous youngster who took pride in work that was letter-perfect. But one day her fourth-grade teacher sent home a report card with a C-plus, noting that the student took “liberties with her cursive, making it too creative and, therefore, illegible.”

Instead of wallowing in self-pity, Beachler was delighted that someone had recognized her work as creative. Today, the 33-year-old Patterson Park resident prints original works of art for a living, having founded a venture she named in part after her teacher’s comments — Illegible Ink.

Pile of Craft is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Baltimore. The free event is one of two held annually by Charm City Craft Mafia, a group of local craftmakers who look to create exposure for their artwork.

“I’ve lived in D.C. and Seattle, and this is the tightest-knit [craftmaking] community,” said Beachler. “They’re always supportive and helpful in bouncing ideas off one another about artwork and stores. It’s easy to say we’re all friends and there are no rivalries.”

Pile of Craft, she said, draws craftmakers from as far as New York and South Carolina.

This year’s show includes work from such artisans as Jennifer Strunge of Baltimore, whose Cotton Monster creations are made of recycled clothing and bedding.

Rachel Bone of Baltimore runs an artwork and apparel business, Red Prairie Press. One of the founding members of Charm City Craft Mafia, Bone said her artwork is screenprinted by hand “on sweatshop-free apparel.”

Val Lucas of Charles Village restored a 100-year-old letterpress and subsequently formed her business, Bowerbox Press, making printed items such as greeting cards, stationery and even covers for blank journals.

“I enjoy displaying all types of my work so that people can see the breadth of what is possible in printmaking,” Lucas said. “The younger community [of crafters] is very interconnected. … There’s a lot of support for people who are trying to make a living off of their chosen art in Baltimore, and new opportunities keep popping up to keep us busy.”

Lucas said that much of the art and craft on display at the show is made of objects “that might not be selected for gallery exposure.”

Beachler is among more than 40 artists and crafters who will take part in the fourth annual Pile of Craft show, which features handmade items for sale, including stationery, apparel, jewelry, handbags, plush toys, ceramics, comic books and prints.

UK Today News: Rodolfo Torre Cantu – Mexican Gubernatorial Candidate Killed In Northern Mexico Today

Rodolfo Torre Cantu: Barely a day after the world hears the shocking news of the murder of Mexican singer Sergio Vega, comes the news that Mexican Gubernatorial candidate Rodolfo Torre Cantu, was killed by gunfire near Ciudad Victoria on Monday morning.

Rodolfo Torre Cantu belonged to the Institutional Revolutionary Part (PRI). Interior Secretary Fernando Gomez Mont condemned the killings and stated: “All of Mexico should condemn this cowardly act.”

Reports say that besides Rodolfo Torre Cantu, three other people, which included Torre’s campaign manager, were killed in the gunfire. Four other people were wounded and taken to the Doctor Norberto Trevino General Hospital in Tamaulipas.

Mexico is gearing up for it’s elections on Sunday for 12 governorships and state and municipal offices, and the slain Rodolfo Torre Cantu was the biggest contender for the elections.

2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The 88th edition of the world famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will be staged on June 27, and another assault on the record books is in store for fans of the race.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motor sports race in America and a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region. First competed in 1916 and this year marks the 88th running of the “Race to the Clouds.”
In 2010, the race will take place on Sunday, June 27 with race related events all week long. Registration and Tech are on Tuesday June 22 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Colorado Springs. Practice on the mountain takes place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. Friday evening June 25 is “Fan Fest” in downtown Colorado Springs, featuring motorcycle jumpers, two beer gardens, a chili cook-off, live bands and the Denver Bronco Cheerleaders and is expected to draw over 35,000 spectators.

Saturday is the vintage car show and Sunday is race day. This year the race to the clouds will have 11 classes and features a variety of automotive, semi truck, exhibition, open wheel, super stock car, pro truck, vintage, and motorcycle classes with a field approaching 200 competitors.

Race fans can look for a repeat performance by the star-studded field of top international drivers, led by defending champion Nobuhiro Tajima, who won his fourth straight Unlimited division crown in 2009 with a clocking of 10:15.368. The Japanese ace prevailed over a pair of European rally car champions, a Ford Fiestas driven by Sweden’s Marcus Gronholm and Britain’s Mark Rennison in his Ford RS200. All three drivers, along with Andreas Eriksson, another Swedish Ford Racing Team driver, are expected back in June.
Vintage Division Automobiles

Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing will be fielding a Vintage Division in 2010. The date has been moved up to accommodate the paving plan on the mountain. This will be the last year to race the upper mountain’s dirt course.

In 2009, six vintage division drivers added their names to the record books as hill climb rookies. Ten vintage autos ran including three Mustangs, three Falcons, a Corvette, a Oldsmobile Super 88, a Desoto Firedome 8 and a ‘71 Cuda and a new course record of 13:56 was set for the Vintage Division automobiles.

RMVR sponsors a car and bike show in Manitou Springs featuring vehicles from the vintage car and motorcycle divisions and local residents’ private vehicles. Manitou is a community nestled in the foothills just west of Colorado Springs. The setting for the show is in a park with plenty of shade, grass, music and food vendors. The ‘52 Desoto Hemi of Dean Smith and Frank McKinnon were show favorites in 2009, taking home a trophy for best racecar. The car show will be June 26, 2010.

Muerte de Sergio Vega

It is no longer a rumor. Famed singer Sergio Vega “El Shaka” has been murdered. He was shot to dead in what can only be described as a hit of sorts, when he was discovered shot upwards of thirty times in his red Cadillac in the town of Sinaloa. His death comes as a great shock to his legion of fans, who had been enjoying his music while on the Pacific Tour he was currently on. Had the famed singer though been given a precursor though of his impending demise?

Details of the attack are sketchy, but accounts have it that he was driving on U.S.- Mexico Highway 15. His red Cadillac had just made its way through the toll booth at San Miguel. Reports say that he had only gotten about 10 yards from the toll booth when shooters emerged and started to open fire into his vehicle. In a strange bit of irony that leads many to believe this was a hit, an interpreter’s companion was injured in the hail of gunfire but survived the onslaught.

Here is where the story gets strange though. It was not but a few hours earlier that Sergio Vega had to contradict stories that he had indeed been murdered. Imagine having to get up and tell people that you had not been murdered. What must have been going through his head that such a report had even surfaced. You would have to imagine that something had to be in his mind thinking about it. His own words to the local media even spell this out. He was quoted as saying “Of course I walk with some trepidation all grupero, all the people who sailed in the northern and band music, and me navigate songs strong as the father of the devil, the two large figures, many corridos, any new place, yes feels and begins to think and is temorcito and should be entrusted to God.”

The death was confirmed by a businessman that had dealings with the Pacific Tour by the name of Jesus Tirado Camacho. What could have been the possible motive though? Was this a case of a rival being jealous of the success of "El Shaka" and decided to take out their frustration? Was it death by association? That might seem to be a weird thing to say, but it is alleged that earlier that very day, one of the acts that was on the tour with Vega by the name of Grupero were threatened with harm by unknown forces. Perhaps it was a group that wanted to be on the tour but was not deemed good enough.

There are not many other explanations. Vega was not thought to have any type of bad connections or to be involved in anything of a drug related nature so it seems to cancel out the typical theories. Was it a case of driving into a bad area and getting gunned down? if so then why not take out everyone in the car? Yes it would seem that Vega was targeted for whatever reason. In the end though, no matter what the reason, the sad fact is that another talented musician is gone far too soon in a senseless violent act. Hopefully someone will be brought to justice.

Peggy west milwaukee

The debate over Arizona’s immigration bill has often been heated on both sides, and Peggy West has reignited the debate. The Milwaukee, Wis., County Supervisor, an elected Democrat, made a few major mistakes in her speech against the measure, raising questions of basic geography, education and the election of officials. The reality of Peggy West’s comments are that she, like every other politician, should read up before speaking her opinion.

Milwaukee

Peggy West’s Milwaukee comments

In a debate over a possible Milwaukee boycott on Arizona, County Supervisor Peggy West spoke out in support of the bill. Her comments, however, were based on the idea that Arizona simply does not share a border with Mexico. As video of the meeting shows, Peggy West stated

“If this was Texas, which is a state that is directly on the border with Mexico, and they were calling for a measure like this saying that they had a major issue with undocumented people flooding their borders, I would have to look twice at this. But this is a state that is a ways removed from the border,”

In interviews later, Peggy West did try to defend her statements and understanding of geography, saying

“I did get a passing grade in Geography in high school and in college and I do obviously know that Arizona is on the border… Had Texas come out with the legislation, having the largest border, I think that I would be more receptive to the fact that there was a problem. But having it be Arizona, having it be the second largest boarder and knowing there are troops on the border in Arizona, it didn’t seem to me that this legislation was particularly necessary at this moment in time,”

Some of the other members of the Milwaukee County Board did speak up during the meeting, assuring the observers that the board did, in fact, have a basic understanding of U.S. Geography.
